			AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 216 November 3,1995

0945+34 SUPERNOVA 1995al IN NGC 3021

We have been informed by Mirko Villi (Forli, Italy) and the Central Bureau for 
Astronomical Telegrams (IAU Circular 625.5) of the visual discovery of a supernova in 
NGC 3021 by Stefano Pesci and Piero Mazza (Milan, Italy) on Nov 1.04 UT, at visual 
magnitude 13.0-13.5 using a 0.35-m telescope. They report that nothing unusual was noted 
at this location on Oct 25.2 UT to a limiting magnitude of about 16.0. They also report that 
no object appears at this position on the Palomar Sky Survey

The supernova is located 15" W and 2.9" S of the nucleus of NGC 3021. The (2000) position 
of the supernova is:

	RA 09h 5Om 55.97s	Dec. +33deg 33m 09.4s (IAU Circ. 6253)

C. Pollas, Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) reports that a star of about mag.(V) 14.3 
was detected on a 10-min exposure plate with the OCA Schmidt telescope on Nov 2.19 UT. 
This object does not appear on the original Palomar Sky Survey ( IAU Circ. 6255).

G. Hurst (Basingstoke, England) estimated the brightness of SN 1995a1 at mag 13.2 from 
an unfiltered CCD image obtained by M. Armstrong (Rolvenden, UK) on Nov 2.1 UT, 
with 0.25-m Schmidt Cassegrain telescope (IAU Circ, 625S). G. Emerson (Golden, 
Colorado) estimated the magnitude of SN 1995a1 at about 13.2 on an unfiltered CCD 
image taken with a 0.25-m telescope on Nov 2.5 UT.

Please use the accompanying AAVSO Preliminary "e" scale chart prepared by C. Scovil 
using the sequence from the Hippancos Input Catalog (photoelectric), and the Guide Star 
Catalog (via vsnet, Kyoto U.), to observe SN 1995a1. When reporting observations to 
AAVSO Headquarters, please be sure to indicate which chart and which comparison stars 
you used to make your estimates.

There is a nearby star east-northeast of the nucleus of NGC 3021, at mag. (V) 16.0 (IAU 
Circ. 625.5). This star is indicated as mag.14.1 in the Guide Star Catalogue

NGC 3021!

FADING OF 1510+82 Z URSAE MINORIS

The recently re-classified R Coronae Borealis star, Z UMi (see AAUSO Alert Notice 195), is
