THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF VARIABLE STAR OBSERVERS 25 Birch Street, Cambridge, NIA 02138 USA BITNET: aavso@cfa8 SPAN: nssdca::cfa8::aavso Tel. 617-354-0484 FAX 617-354-0665 AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 148 (September 3,1991) NOVA SCUTI 1991 The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams and Frank Bateson, Director of the Variable Star Section of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand, inform us that RASNZ member Paul Camilleri, Cobram, Victoria, Australia, has photographically discovered a nova in Scutum on August 30.468 UT at photographic magnitude 10.3, visual magnitude 10.5. R. H. McNaught, Anglo-Australian Observatory, reports the precise position (1950.0) of the nova as measured on an Uppsala Southern Schmidt plate taken August 31.54 to be: RA = 18h 44m 26.58s Dec. = -08deg 24' 12.0" Paul reports that on Aug. 8.604 UT the nova was photographic magnitude < 12, and on Aug. 31.38 visual magnitude 10.5. D. A J. Seargent, The Entrance, New South Wales, also obtained visual magnitude 10.5 around the same time. R. H. McNaught reports that no star appears in the position of the nova on the first Palomar Sky Survey Blue or Red plates. The pre-nova was recorded on UK Schmidt plates on September 6, 1980, at magnitude(R) - 20; May 3, 1981, at magnitude(J) - 21; and August 23, 1984, at magnitude(R) - 20: (IAU Circular 5332) Please use the accompanying AAVSO charts prepared by Charles Scovil to observe the nova, and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters. Our congratulations to Paul Camilleri on his third discovery this year! REQUEST TO MONITOR DWARF NOVAE FOR IUE OBSERVING RUNS Astronomers in the Netherlands have requested our assistance in monitoring dwarf novae for their upcoming IUE observing run on dwarf novae in outburst, scheduled for September 16-17, 1991. Please call in your observations of dwarf novae in outburst September 13, 14, 15, and 16 so we may update the astronomers before and during their observing run. The Headquarters answering machine (617-354-0484) is on nights and weekends for your convenience. Many thanks for your observing efforts and your valuable astronomical contributions. Good observing!
