AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 340 (August 30, 2006)

SUBJECT: REQUEST TO MONITOR 1744-06 RS OPHIUCHI FOR MULTIWAVELENGTH CAMPAIGN

Object: 1744-06 RS OPH

Coordinates: R.A. 17h 50m 13.202s Dec. -06o 42' 28.48" (2000.0)

Our assistance in monitoring the recurrent nova RS Oph has been requested by Dr. Mark Wagner, University of Arizona, and several colleagues, who have scheduled observations by the Spitzer, Chandra, and Swift satellites in the coming two weeks. V Observations are requested of visual and CCD observers, and of any PEP observers who might be able to reach magnitude 11-12.

Barring last-minute changes, the satellite observing schedules are as follow:

Chandra LETGS
 Sep 04 2006 10:47:22.593 - 22:14:02.593 UT
 Sep 07 2006 02:41:36.680 - 14:08:16.680
 Sep 08 2006 17:19:31.347 - 23:12:51.347

Spitzer
 Sep 09 2006 20:00:56.700 RS Oph
 Sep 09 2006 20:47:26.100 RS Oph background

Swift
will be observing about once a week, but exact times are not available.

The recurrent nova RS Oph, which went into outburst February 12 (see AAVSO Alert Notice 335), reached visual magnitude 4.8, and was brighter than 10.5 for about 85 days, is presently at about magnitude 11.8 in the 'dip' that is part of the recovery from outburst, according to observations in the AAVSO International Database.

Nightly observations from now through September are requested of all observers. CCD observers are also asked to carry out as long CCD time series runs (V filter) as possible on the days of observations, with a cadence such that each observation has at least S/N=50. If observations with more than one filter are possible, all should be made within the same S/N=50 constraint.

Charts: AAVSO a, b, c, and d scale charts for RS Oph are available at:

http://www.aavso.org/cgi-bin/searchcharts3.pl?name=RS%20OPH

CCD observers should use the overlined sequence stars marked on the 'd' chart.
Information from Munari and Henden for these stars is as follows:
