1. MONITOR DWARF NOVAE FOR HST OBSERVATIONS

Dr. Paula Szkody (University of Washington) has asked for help in monitoring 2201+11 SDSS2205 prior to a scheduled Hubble Space Telescope observation on May 23, 2005 (UT).

This is a new UGWZ dwarf nova discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with a quiescent magnitude of around V=20. It has never been observed in outburst and is not expected to be in outburst on this date. However, if it *is* in outburst then its brightness could damage the ACIS instrument on HST. As a result, the HST mission planners want to be absolutely sure that SDSS2205 is not in outburst prior to the scheduled observation.

We are requesting V filtered observations of this field on May 21-22, 2005. We are making an unusual request in that we are asking for the FITS images themselves to be uploaded to the AAVSO's FTP site. So please follow these procedures:

  1. Observe SDSS2205 once anytime from May 21 - May 22 (UT). Observe as late as your observing window and weather will allow. Set your exposure to go at least as faint as 15th mag for S/N=3.
  2. Submit your estimate to the AAVSO.
  3. Send the final, calibrated (stacked if neccessary) FITS image to the AAVSO via FTP:
  4. host: ftp.aavso.org
    user: sdss
    password: sdss

We will compile our data and submit it to Dr. Skzody and her associates at 7UT on May 23 (2am EDT). An f-scale chart is available at http://www.aavso.org/cgi-bin/searchcharts3.pl?name=SDSS220511

The AAVSO Chat Room will be open on the 22nd for the project.

This is first of three objects in this program. Similar notices will be sent when the other two objects have been added to the HST schedule. This is likely to be in June and/or July.
