In the new web tools I'm writing the reported uncertainty of an observation will be well represented across the board. As a result everyone will know who is reporting errors and who isn't. I'm hoping that peer pressure will do the rest. :) Seriously, it is a little like reporting charts and comparison stars. When I started here almost 8 years ago very few people reported either of those. Now I'd say it's closer to 75% and increasing steadily. I think we'll be at the same level in CCD uncertainty/error reporting in a year or two. The biggest obstacle, in my opinion, is that there is no consensus on a single right way to calculate it so people must rely on their software packages which are inconsistent in how they do it. So we end up with these monstrous debates on the discussion group that are dominated by heavy statistical arguments which scare away the average observer out of fear that error reporting will take the fun out of it. We need a better set of tutorials and policy on the subject. It's coming soon enough. And peer pressure never hurt. :) Aaron _______________________________________________
