Finding Z UMa using the AAVSO Variable Star Atlas

First, use a planisphere or sky chart for the appropriate month to verify that the constellation of Ursa Major is visible during the date and time you wish to observe. If it is, then note the configuration of the brightest stars. Next, go to the Index page of the AAVSO Variable Star Atlas and locate the same star configuration. You will probably have to rotate the planisphere to come up with the same orientation. Note that in this example the Index refers you to Chart 22.
