These light curves define the long-term behavior of variables stars and provide the basic sets of observations that may be used to correlate multiwavelength data and to check theories and match models. The monograph format enables us to present long-term variable star observations, with each Monograph containing 20 or more years of computer- generated light curves on one star. R Coronae Borealis Light Curves, 1843 - 1990 AAVSO Monograph 4 contains light curves of R Coronae Borealis from 1843 through 1990. The AAVSO historical light curve from mid-1843 to October 9, 1972 (JD 2441600) is presented on page 1. This light curve has been included to give a more complete picture of R Coronae Borealis' behavior. The variability of this star was first announced by Edward Pigott in 1795 when R Coronae Borealis faded and became invisible. The observations prior to 1890 were compiled and discussed by Ludendorff (Potsdam Publ. No. 57, 1908). The observations made after 1890 at Harvard Observatory and by members of American, British, and French variable star observer organizations were compiled by Leon Campbell, first Recorder (Director) of the AAVSO, and the light curve from 1843 to 1923 was compiled and published by him in Harvard Circular No. 247, 1923. Later observations were compiled and the historical light curve on page 1 of this monograph was compiled and prepared by Margaret W. Mayall, the second Recorder and Director emeritus of the AAVSO, and part of it was published by her in Journ. Royal Astron. Soc. Canada, Volume 54, 193, 1960. The AAVSO observations that comprise this historical light curve have been published in Popular Astronomy, Volumes 19 - 43 (1917 - 1935); Harvard Annals, Volumes 104 - 107 and 110 - 116 (1935 - 1946); AAVSO Quarterly Reports 1 - 27 (1946 - 1961), and AAVSO Report 29 (1961 - 1963). Pages 2 through 12 contain computer-generated light curves from 1963 through 1990, with each dot representing one observation. Observations are plotted Julian date versus magnitude, and the start of each year (January 0) is indicated along the upper axis. A scaled grid is provided to assist in determining the exact date and magnitude of any data point. Factual information on R Coronae Borealis and a Key to Symbols are given on page xiii. The observations in this monograph are the contributions of AAVSO members or observers in the United States and abroad. 1,210 observers have contributed 79,874 observations to these light curves, and their names and observer codes are given on pages vii through xii. Organizations whose members have contributed observations to the AAVSO either individually or through their organization are listed on page xii. In preparing the data for publication, each observation was evaluated for accuracy by my technical assistant Elizabeth O. Waagen, and by me. Software used in evaluating and plotting the observations was developed by my technical assistant E. Grant Foster. The observations from September 22, 1963 (JD 2438295 - the end date of AAVSO Report 29) on included in this monograph have been preserved on magnetic tape, cartridge, and printout. Electronic, diskette, magnetic tape, or printout copies of these observations may be obtained by writing to the AAVSO Director. v PAGE vi Acknowledgements We dedicate AAVSO Monograph 4 to David W. Rosebrugh in memory of his love of and dedication to variable stars, his long service, and his many contributions to the AAVSO. Our special thanks go to Clinton B. Ford for his very generous contribution for the preparation of this and subsequent monographs. Our sincere thanks go to AAVSO members and friends for their contributions to prepare and publish these monographs. We thank the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for their support of our monograph series and for the grant provided to the AAVSO to publish this and other monographs. We gratefully acknowledge the support provided through National ScienceFoundation Grant AST 7910576 for computerization of a portion of the data in this monograph. We acknowledge with thanks the computer support of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the continued support of Professor Owen J. Gingerich and Barbara L. Welther for the processing of major part of the data and data preservation. The evaluation of the data and the preparation of this monograph supplement were accomplished using the computer facilities at AAVSO Headquarters. This computer hardware was purchased through grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (grant awards NAGW 1493 and NAG 5-1459), the Kenilworth Fund, and the Theodore H. Dunham Fund for Astrophysical Research. We gratefully acknowledge these grants. Many AAVSO assistants helped in the preparation of the data for publication. My special thanks go to Elizabeth O. Waagen for her careful evaluation of the observations and plotting the light curves, and to E. Grant Foster, for developing the computer programs for the IBM-PC compatible MS-DOS computers at AAVSO Headquarters to evaluate, plot, and prepare the data for publication. Robert S. Hill, Charles M. Jones, and Richard J. Strazdas assisted in the initial development of the computer programs to manage the large volumes of data. Barbara Silva, Douglas Van Orsow, Young Lim, Bethune Kelly, Michael Bickford and several other student-assistants have helped in making the data computer-readable. The dedication, the many, many hours of observing, and the untiring efforts of our observers in pursuit of contributing to variable star astronomy have made this publication possible. Our very sincere thanks and gratitude go to them for their valuable astronomical contributions. High-luminosity stars of spectral class B - R, they have carbon- and helium- rich and hydrogen-poor spectra, with emission lines of metals seen at minimum brightness. Optically, they are at maximum brightness the majority of the time, and at irregular intervals they show non-periodic fadings of 1 to 9 magnitudes, lasting from several tens to several hundreds of days. Small-amplitude pulsations of several tenths of a magnitude in amplitude, with periods ranging from 20 to 100 days, are superimposed on the light curves of some stars of this type. Spectrum: C0,0(F8PEP) In the spectrum: F8 - spectrum at maximum E - emission lines P - peculiar C0,0 - carbon star spectrum: the first number represents temperature sub-class, and the second refers to overall strength of carbon bands : KEY TO SYMBOLS Symbols used in this monograph are: . = 1 observation v = variable is fainter than the magnitude indicated by the vertex of the "v" on the light curve (variable not seen) Please note that there may appear to be horizontal lines in some parts of the light curves. These "lines" are in fact very dense concentrations of individual observations. xiii PAGE xiv R CORONAE BOREALIS LIGHT CURVES 1843 - 1990
