Liller (Vina de Mar, Chile) and the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU Circular, Number 7242) of W. Liller's photographic discovery of an apparent nova in Circinus at magnitude 7.7 on August 23.0110 UT. CCD frames taken on Aug. 23.9717 yield a position of R.A. = 14h23m23s.6, Decl. = -69o08'45".1 (equinox 2000.0; uncertainty +/- 0".5), at which time the magnitude measured with a broadband V filter was 7.79. An AAVSO Alert Notice with more information and chart(s) for observing this nova will be issued and placed on AAVSO web site (www.aavso.org) tomorrow. We have also received the following additional observations of the apparent nova: AAVSO Observer UT Mag. Initials AUG 24.3021 8.4 JA AUG 24.4222 7.6 SRX AUG 24.4396 7.5 SRX AUG 24.4528 7.6 SRX AUG 24.4625 7.6 SRX AUG 24.4722 7.5 SRX AUG 24.4771 7.6 SRX AUG 24.581 8.1 PEX Congratulations to W. Liller on his discovery! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0401+50 FO PERSEI The dwarf nova type cataclysmic variable FO PER appears to be in outburst, as indicated by the following observations: AAVSO Observer UT Mag. Initials AUG 24.2970 14.10 CCDV ZRE According to the AAVSO International Database this star is fainter than visual magnitude 15.5 during quiescence. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- We thank the following contributors for the data that they have provided for this News Flash: JA - A.
