This observation was in fact an independent discovery of the nova. Gary, a longtime AAVSO member, observer, and nova searcher, discovered V1494 Aql in the course of his nova patrol on December 1, 1999, using 7 x 35 binoculars. We extend our sincere apologies to Gary for not reporting his observation as an independent discovery, and we congratulate him for his discovery! Good observing! Janet A.
