1999 AAVSO Survey

Prepared by Al Holm, former AAVSO president

The following survey was mailed with the AAVSO Christmas card, Julian Date Calendar, and Newsletter #21 on December 17. Please use this electronic version if at all possible, since your doing so will save us time and reduce the potential for errors. However, if you fill this one out please do not mail in the printed copy. Thanks!

This survey is completely anonymous.

Dear Member/Observer/Friend of AAVSO,

We would like to hear from you about your interests and concerns and about your opinions of some of the activities of the Association. Please take a little time to respond to the questions on the enclosed four-page questionnaire. Responses received by February 28, 1999 will be tallied for presentation in the Newsletter and at a future meeting. Although we have specified a deadline, we value your comments at any time and will try to incorporate your suggestions even if received late.

Meetings

One major concern of the Association is the cost and effort involved with the annual fall meeting. Hotel costs in Cambridge are skyrocketing, and many members can't afford the expense. But when the fall meeting was held at Chicopee in 1997 where rooms were much cheaper, attendance was very low. Meetings also exact a toll on the headquarters staff. It takes a lot of work to plan and organize a meeting, especially when trying to hunt down hotel bargains. So what is the answer? Various suggestions for streamlining have been floated. What are your ideas? Would one longer meeting a year be sufficient? Do you value visits to Headquarters from time to time, or should we move all meetings out of Cambridge? What if we dropped the banquet or the scientific paper session? Should meetings be shorter? Please be sure to fill out section 11 on meeting ideas to express your opinions. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Janet A. Mattei

Director, AAVSO
