HOA at NSTA in Boston

NSTA Display
In late March, the AAVSO set up a booth featuring Hands-On Astrophysics at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) annual convention held in Boston. More than 28,000 science teachers attended the conference, and AAVSO staff members and teacher volunteers handed out hundreds of pamphlets and posters to interested passers-by. As this was the very first time the AAVSO had participated in such an event, we at HQ had no idea what to expect. While our booth display was clearly more interesting than some of our neighbors', we found that our efforts had a more 'home-made" look than, say, the high-tech NASA display just down the corridor-which is why we worked hard to get a professional display almost the instant we were done at NSTA! The booth's ~16-foot high "junk sculpture" shown at right (made from crutches, bric-…-brac, old CDs, discarded trophies, eyeglasses, ceramic stars and hands, and an old chandelier, among other things), was designed strictly as an attention-getting device by the AAVSO's own resident assemblage artist Lynn Matthews Anderson. Our sincere thanks to those teachers who helped staff our booth during the convention.
