To All AAVSO Observers: THANKS!!

Our sincere thanks to the many AAVSO observers who responded to the plea in the last Newsletter by switching to the standardized AAVSO reporting format. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. We are pleased to say that the majority of those previously using non-standardized formats have made the necessary changes, and the savings in time has been most dramatic!

Typical of some of the comments we received were those from Steve O'Connor of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, who wrote:

"I recently received the latest edition of the Newsletter. When I came to the page that included the drawing of the technical assistant hunched over her keyboard in exasperation because of more incoming non-standardized observations I realized that I needed to make some changes in what I've been submitting. I'm sure my future reports will save you time and reduce your stress level !!"

Just as a reminder (and as a further plea to those who have yet to change to a standardized format): With over 30,000 observations coming in each month from over 250 observers, we truly need everyone's help and cooperation in submitting your observations in a format we can work with efficiently and accurately. Here are some very basic things you can do that will help us a great deal:

  1. Send in a monthly report.
If you do not send a monthly report, your observations will NOT be added to the AAVSO archives. DOS software to enter your observations and create an AAVSO monthly report is available at no charge from AAVSO Headquarters or may be downloaded from our website under Observations.
  2. Send in your monthly report each month that you make observations. Don't let your reports pile up!
  3. Use AAVSO format in your monthly report.
  4. Use AAVSO format when reporting nightly observations for the News Flash.
  5. Use the one-letter comment abbreviations about your observations when necessary.
  6. Write your report legibly.
  7. Again, our sincere thanks for making our work easier!
