In the Mail...

We are always happy to hear about the experiences of our members, observers and friends. We look forward to notes and correspondence from around the world. Below is an excerpt of a letter we received at AAVSO HQ from a new member and observer Patrick Moynihan of Dorchester, Massachusetts.

To AAVSO Staff:
Mon. Nov. 19 2001

I would like to first; Thank You;...for electing me, Patrick F. Moynihan as an Annual member in the AAVSO. I love the letter and the membership certificate that you sent me in the mail...I want to thank you and wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season.

Second, I managed to get my telescope out in time to see the Leonid meteor shower early sunday moning November 18, 2001 at 4:51am. I set up my telescope in the backyard and aimed the telescope at the Southeastern section of the sky to view the meteor shower and do a little star gazing. It was cold...but clear enough to see most of the stars of the constellations. I could see yellow-cream colored flashes of meteorites burning up in the earth’s atmosphere. Janet, or whomever is reading this, it was a beautiful sight!...A beautiful view showed up clearly and brightly in my telescope view - a large white star surrounded my five smaller bluish-white stars and a meterotite flashing by! I made a quick drawing.

...I was chilled to the bone and came indoors to warm up...left my telescope in the backyard and turned on my radio shack scanner. I listened in on Citizen’s Band frequency 145.230 to a couple of amateur astronomers who were watching the meteor shower also...The men described the meteorite flash colors as red, green, and yellow (like the ones I had seen).

...I was cold and went out to enjoy the last of the show until 6:05am and watched a beautiful sunset. It was a wonderful night, my sister was laughing, I could have set up my telescope upstairs without going out into the cold air, a good idea for my next observation...

On closing this letter I want to again thank you all, wish you a safe and happy holiday season, so clear skies and good observing!

Sincerely,
Patrick F. Moynihan

Along with his request for data AAVSO member/observer David Swann sent these kind words:

I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the AAVSO staff for their prompt and courteous response to my request for data and information in the past. Your office and organization is run in a very professional manner that reflects well on the staff and Janet Mattei. Please let the other staff know my comments.

Sincerely,
David Swann
