Awards and Recognition

The Director's Award

The AAVSO Director’s Award, in the form of a plaque, is awarded at the Director’s discretion to an outstanding observer who contributes to special observing projects. Four awards were given at this year’s 91st Spring Meeting in Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii. The recipients were:
William Albrecht USA
Thomas A. Cragg Australia
Rod Stubbings Australia
Richard E. Wend USA

Supernova Award

This special AAVSO award is given to the visual discoverer of a supernova and was presented this year to Australia’s Robert O. Evans for his visual discovery of Supernova 2001ig in NGC 7424 on December 10.43 UT. The award was announced at the 91st Annual Meeting, October 26, 2002, in Somerville, MA.

Special Recognition

The AAVSO also presented three special awards at the 91st Spring meeting to recognize three individuals for their support of the AAVSO International GRB Network. The award recipients were:

Arne Henden
“...for his greatly valued mentoring of the observers and his enthusiastic and untiring support of the activites of the AAVSO International GRB Network.”

Chryssa Kouveliotou and Gerald Fishman
“...for strongly supporting the activites of the AAVSO International GRB Network, organizing with the AAVSO the Second High-Energy Astrophysics Workshop for Amateur Astronomers, and for the greatly valued and fruitful collaboration.”

William Tyler Olcott Distinguished Service Award

Dorrit receives the awardInitiated in 2000, this award is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions in mentoring and promoting variable star astronomy. This year’s recipient was Dorrit Hoffleit. The award was presented to Dorrit at the 91st Annual Meeting in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 26, 2002.

“...for her legacy to variable star astronomy through her research, publications,student mentoring, support, and popularization for over 70 years, and for her being such an especially faithful, devoted, and supportive member and friend of the AAVSO since 1930.”
