AAVSO Special Notice #101

Supernova 2008bk in NGC 7793
March 28, 2008

The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBET 1315, 
D.W.E. Green, editor) announced the discovery of a bright apparent 
supernova in NGC 7793 by L.A.G. "Berto" Monard of Pretoria, 
South Africa.  The supernova, SN 2008bk, is located approximately 
2.3 arcminutes north of the nucleus of NGC 7793, a bright 
flocculent spiral galaxy of type Scd.  Monard measured the supernova
at magnitude 12.6 +/- 0.2 at 2008 March 25.141 (JD 2454550.641).  
This supernova has not yet been spectrally classified, but the 
galaxy is undergoing active star formation and a core collapse 
supernova is possible.


The supernova is located at RA: 23 57 47.5 , Dec: -32 33 24 (J2000)

coordinates into VSP: http://www.aavso.org/observing/charts/vsp/


Please submit observations to the AAVSO with the name "SN 2008bk"
or using the AAVSO Unique ID "000-BFT-152".  Comparison stars have 
not yet been assigned, so please clearly indicate which stars you
use when making visual estimates or performing photometry.
