AAVSO Special Notice #123

Possible nova in Centaurus
September 3, 2008

A possible nova in Centaurus was discovered by G. Pojmanski et al. 
of the ASAS-3 project (vsnet-alert 10482).  The existence of the 
bright transient (V=8.3 at maximum) has been confirmed, but the 
object has not been definitively classified as a Nova.  It was
first detected by ASAS-3 on 2008 August 26.045 (JD 2454704.545)
at V=9.971, and rose to V=8.385 by 2008 August 30.040 (JD 
2454708.540).  Pending classification, the AAVSO requests 
observations of this new object.  An AAVSO Alert Notice will
be issued if and when the object is classified as a Nova.

A sequence for the field was prepared by M. Morel (AVSON #1328,
and private communication) and has been uploaded to the AAVSO
VSP.  Both visual observations and instrumental photometry are
encouraged.


This object is located at the following coordinates from Sostero
et al. (see vsnet-alert 10484):

RA: 14 35 02.54 , Dec: -64 06 20.0 (J2000)

This object has been assigned the provisional AAVSO designation
"VSX J143502.5-640620" and the AUID "000-BFT-811".  Please
