AAVSO Special Notice #154

Possible nova in the Large Magellanic Cloud
May 7, 2009

W. Liller of Vina del Mar, Chile has reported the appearance of a
possible nova in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The object appeared at
an unfiltered photographic magnitude of 12.1 on 2009 May 04.994
(JD 2454956.494) on a pair of images taken with Kodak Tech Pan film.

The approximate position of this object is

RA: 05h 31.4m , Dec: -67d 06m .

This is in an extremely crowded field within the LMC, so the progenitor
position is unknown at this time. Observations of the new object to
obtain precision astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy are requested.

An AAVSO Alert Notice will be issued if and when the object is confirmed
as a nova or other noteworthy event.

This AAVSO Special Notice was prepared by M. Templeton.
