AAVSO Special Notice #156

Update on possible Nova in LMC from Special Notice #154 (revision of Special Notice #155)
May 9, 2009

(Note: this Special Notice replaces #155 to correct the AUID. We apologize for any inconvenience.)

The possible nova LMC 2009 #2 announced in AAVSO Special Notice #154 has
been detected by several observers, and was also announced in IAUC 9042
(D.W.E. Green, editor). L.A.G. Monard (Pretoria, South Africa) has
performed astrometry of the source, and provides the following coordinates:

RA: 05 31 26.42 , Dec: -67 05 39.4

Monard reports the star was at an unfiltered magnitude of 12.5 on
2009 May 07.716 (JD 2454959.216).

Terry Bohlsen (Armidale, NSW, Australia) confirmed the astrometry,
with coordinates matching those of Monard's within 0.5 arcseconds.

We note that spectroscopy of this object has not yet been obtained, and
therefore the object has not yet been confirmed as a nova. It is possible
that it could be a foreground cataclysmic variable in outburst and not
a nova. Spectroscopy is urgently requested to confirm the nature of
the source.

Please submit photometry of the object to the AAVSO using the identifier
"VSX J053126.4-670539" or the AUID "000-BJP-186". An AAVSO Alert Notice
will be issued if and when the object is determined to be a nova.

This AAVSO Special Notice was prepared by M. Templeton.
