Replacement gear for CGEM RA motor?

Hello, For the 2nd time in a year, the little plastic reduction gear inside the gearbox of the RA motor assembly of BSM-Hamren has stripped some teeth, rendering the mount inoperable. Replacing the whole motor assembly seems wasteful and expensive, especially if it happens so frequently! Why this is happening to me is another issue, but for now, I am looking for a good source of gears to get an "exact" replacement if possible.

I attach a photo of the small gear. It has 24 teeth on the larger 3/8" diameter, and 12 teeth on the 1/4" diameter. It is about 3/16" tall. Looks like about 3/32" or 2.5mm shaft. (All measurements at this small level are approximate!)

Actually, a metal replacement may be the better way to go.

Thanks for any leads,

Mike

gears

I wonder if someone with a CNC mill, or even a 3D printer, could make a bunch for the community.  Certainly the AAVSO has ~6 CGEMS and would like spares.

Re: gears

If somebody could supply proper drawings or a link to those drawings - then it would be much easier to look for 3D-printer possibilities...

Gears

Hi All,

Deep Space Products sell a DIY kit for upgrading CGEM mounts (see here). It isn't clear to me if they have this particular component but if they do, maybe they would be willing to supply just that part? Cheers,

Mark

P.S. if 3D printing is possible why stop at just the plastic gears - why not print the whole BMS system mount/telescope/software etc and then we can all have one smiley

Celestron Replacement gears

For what ever the reason it is very difficult to get replacement gears, especially high precision ones for Celestron mounts. I have a Meade LX200 that has a set of High Precision gears that cost around 150 (I didn't actually do the upgrade so I could be off in price). The same replacements for my 11" CPC would be over 500 dollars. Plus, I have not been able to find that source for gears in the last several months. I would contact Celestron and see if they have any replacement gears but I suspect you have to buy motor and all! If you find a source please post it for those of us with Celestrons as a future resource.
