Volume 64 Number 1January 2008

You know we are around solar minimum when you look at the sun for two weeks and not see a single spot. Fortunately, the beginning and end of January showed some activity. Gema Araujo caught these wonderful solar images to kick off the new year. The white light image shows active region 10980 on Jan 2, 10:26UT. The prominence at left on Jan 31, 11:12UT, and a few minutes earlier at 10:59UT are filaments on the right that lasted for several days around AR10982. You can track Gema's images at http://www.astrosurf.com/obsolar/

The events listed above meet at least one of the following criteria

  1. Event reported by two or more observers within +/- 5 minutes
  2. Event matched to GOES-8 XRA event to within +/- 15 minutes and event time < 1000 UT
  3. Reported by observer with a high quality rating > 8 (scale 1-10)

Solar Events

Well the first month of 2008 has proven to be quite a slow month for SID's. There was only one correlated SID event this month by one observer. Most observers had no activity at all. Even the GOES-12 satellite had very little activity. There were a total of 15 X-Ray events. Most of these were at the beginning of the month. In fact nine of them were on the 1st. All were B or C class events. Thanks to all of you for submitting reports even those of "No Events". If you don't see your name above that is because in this report I only include the names of those observers who had correlated events. I do, however, include the name and observer ID of all those that reported in as part of the AAVSO monthly report and of course in my database as well. Your observations are noted and appreciated - and important to the overall data set.
