Symbiotic V694 Mon in outburst

The unique symbiotic star V694 Mon is in major outburst in luminosity.

The maximum velocity of its absorptions has increased ( > 2000 km/s)

The ATEL ob of 8.8 V must be measured differently to our aavso data. But been nice to watch it rise...

interesting

It would be interesting to follow the object and see if the events are similar. The 1990 outburst peaked at 9th visual magnitude...

Best wishes - clear skies,

Stella.

V694 Mon

The spectrum of this star is extremely interesting, with deep and broad P Cygni-like profiles. But if I'm not confused, they aren't P-Cyg profiles but absortions coming from the jet that departs from the hot star. Like BL Lac objects, the jet points towars us and the spectrum shows this bizarre appearance.

V694 Mon's interesting spectrum

Hi Fran.  You are correct -- the current thinking regarding the broad absorption troughs in the spectra of V694 Mon is that they come from a jet that is pointed toward us.  The connection you made to BL Lac objects is also very apropos.  Some authors have even referred to jet-producing symbiotic stars such as V695 Mon as "microquasars".

By the way, the Director of the Swift satellite has agreed to have Swift monitor this target every 3 days or so for the next 5 or 6 weeks.

Thanks for your attention to this exciting target!

Cheers,

Jeno
