AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 161 (July 31, 1992)

ANNOUNCEMENT OF 800 NUMBER TELEPHONE LINE FOR AAVSO HQ

An 800-number (toll-free) telephone line has been added at AAVSO Headquarters to enable our observers in the USA to report variable star observations, particularly of variable stars for NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) mission. The AAVSO's 800 number is:

800 - 642 - EUVE  (800 - 642 - 3883)

When calling in your observations please leave your name, phone number, and your observations, reporting the time in your LOCAL time (not UT or GMAT). Be sure to indicate whether your times are Standard or Daylight Savings.

For our observers outside the USA, please use our regular telephone number (617-354-0484). We will reimburse telephone charges for reporting observations, so please send us the list of your phone calls and the charges.

REQUESTS FOR DATA SUPPORT FOR SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS OF VARIABLE STARS

Astronomers scheduled to observe the variable stars listed below [or in the accompanying pdf] with Voyager, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and/or the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) have requested our assistance in the close monitoring of these variable stars and informing them of their behavior, both for scheduling and correlation of multiwavelength observations:

1. OBSERVATIONS WITH VOYAGER. Astronomers at the Center for EUV Astrophysics will be observing the following cataclysmic variables with the Voyager satellite, and they have requested our assistance in monitoring them closely:

0058+40  RX And   now - Aug 29, 1992
2138+43  SS Cyg   Aug 9 - Sep 21, 1992
0409-71  VW Hyi   Sep 1 - Oct 13, 1992

Please monitor these stars during the indicated times and report your observations to Headquarters.

2. OBSERVATIONS WITH EUVE. Accompanying is the list of variable stars [see below and accompanying pdf file] to be surveyed with the EUVE satellite and their survey times. Please observe as many of them as you can and report your observations to HQ. We will shortly be mailing chart and reporting information to all observers. Until then, if you need the charts for any of the stars that will be observed in August, please call our 800 number. Be sure to give your name and the name(s) of the star(s).

3. REMINDERS FOR OBSERVATIONS WITH HST AND IUE (see AAVSO Alert Notice 157)

a. U Gem, VW Hyi, and IP Peg: Your notifications of the outbursts of these stars are crucial for the scheduling and observation of them with HST.

b. YY Dra, TT Crt, and T Pyx: Your notifications of the outbursts of these stars are crucial for the scheduling observations with IUE.

4. REMINDER FOR OBSERVATIONS OF LONG PERIOD VARIABLES FOR THE HIPPARCOS MISSION. The HIPPARCOS satellite is operating very successfully and continues to obtain excellent astrometric and photometric data on 245 large-amplitude variable stars. Your observations continue to play a very important role in predicting the behavior of these stars for scheduling satellite observations. Please continue your close monitoring of them. If you do not have the list of HIPPARCOS large-amplitude variable stars, please call our 800 number and request the information.

Your participation, observation, and prompt telephone notification of the behavior of the stars listed in this Alert Notice are crucial to the success of the space research programs being carried out on them. Your observations are very much needed!

Good Observing and Clear Skies!
