AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 165 (October 26, 1992)

RARE OUTBURST OF 0846+58 BZ URSAE MAJORIS

We have been informed by David York, Abiquiu, NM, that the dwarf nova BZ UMa is having a bright outburst - probably a superoutburst - as shown by his observation on October 26.25 UT at magnitude 10.5. The last confirmed outburst of BZ UMa in the AAVSO data files was in April 1991, and was observed by Gerry Dyck, Patrick Schmeer, and Haakon Dahle.

If this outburst is indeed a superoutburst, i.e., it lasts about 10 days, it will be extremely valuable to see if superhumps (small-amplitude periodic oscillations) can be observed visually. In order to look for superhumps, observations should be made every 10 minutes. Very accurate recording of the times of observation is essential.

Accompanying are AAVSO preliminary "d" and "e" scale charts for BZ UMa. Please observe this star and report your observations to AAVSO. The answering machine (617-354-0484) is on nights and weekends for your convenience.

We extend the appreciation and thanks of the EUVE Science Team for the very enthusiastic response from observers worldwide in monitoring EUVE targets during the satellite's survey mode. Please continue your observations and call them in to the AAVSO.

Many thanks for your efforts. Good observing!
