AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 226 (August 6, 1996)

1817-18 NOVA SAGITTARII 1996

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU
Circular 6443
) that S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery of a nova
by Yukio Sakurai, Mito, Ibaragi-ken, Japan, on July 11.590 UT, at photographic
magnitude 10, using Fuji G400 film and a 300-mm f/2.8 camera lens.  An
additional exposure on July 12 also shows the nova at magnitude 10.

Spectroscopic confirmation of this discovery was made by R. M. Wagner and
P. Martini, Ohio State University, S. G. Starrfield, Arizona State University,
and G. D. Schmidt, University of Arizona, who report that a preliminarily-
reduced specrtrum taken by them on Aug. 4.221 UT with the Multiple Mirror
Telescope indicates that N Sgr 96 is a relatively slow nova in its early
decline phase (IAU Circular 6443).

The position of N Sgr 96 was measured by T. Kojima, YGCO Chiyoda Observatory,
as (IAU Circular 6443):

       R.A. = 18h 23m 42.49s     Decl. = -18 degrees 07' 15.0"   (2000)

Additional observations of N Sgr 96 include:  Jul 12.673 UT, 10.1 CCDR, T.
Kojima, YGCO Chiyoda Observatory (IAU Circular 6443); Jul 13.498, 10.59 V, A.
Gilmore and P. Kilmartin, Mount John University Observatory (IAU Circular
6443
); Aug 5.86, 10.8, L. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa.

Accompanying is a "c" scale AAVSO preliminary chart of N Sgr 96 prepared by
C. Scovil.  Please use this chart to observe the nova, and report your
observations to AAVSO Headquarters, making sure to indicate which comparison
stars you are using.

Congratulations to Yukio Sakurai on his latest discovery!

CHARTS AVAILABLE ON AAVSO FTP SITE AND AAVSO WEB SITE HOME PAGE

Chart links are obsolete; 11/2013 create charts using VSP at http://www.aavso.org/vsp

Electronic copies of the AAVSO chart of N Sgr 96 mentioned in this Alert Notice
are available from our FTP site:

              ftp.aavso.org (198.116.78.2), in /pub/alert226

The chart has also been placed on our Web site at the following address:

The answering machine at AAVSO Headquarters is on nights and weekends for your
convenience.  Please call our charge-free number (800-642-3883) to report your
observations.  If you are cut off when you telephone in your observations,
please wait a few minutes and call back to complete your call.  We have learned
that if someone calls to leave observations on the answering machine and while
they are speaking someone else calls, the first person may be cut off.  We
also encourage observers to send observations by fax to 617-354-0665 or by
e-mail through the Internet to observations@aavso.org.  We would appreciate it
very much if you would report your observations in Universal Time.

Many thanks for your valuable astronomical contributions and your efforts.

Good observing!

Director
