New Upload

Finally clear weather to start on your campaign!! Here in northern Tasmania lot's of great daytime sky - but then the clouds roll in for night time, not good for optical!!

Priority list

A few days ago I sent some observations of V704 And, but bad weather avoid me from continuing.

I would like to know if the list of objects has been published according to their priority, that is, the most urgent at the top, and the low priority at the bottom.

Thank you in advance.

Mario (MMAO)

Priority list

Hi Mario,

The list has been ordered according to the targets' RA and there are only two classes of priorities (first and second). Within each class, targets have equal priority among each other. The only difference is that targets flagged as "first" have higher priority compared to those flagged as "second".

I hope this is helpful :)

V794 Aql

V794 Aql has been fading slowly and is now around 16.5. I gather it will be too late in the season now if this trend continues.

Regards,

Rod.

V794 Aql

Hi Rod,

Thanks for pointing this out!
I have been following the behaviour of this target over the last weeks and seems like it is oscillating between high and intermediate states. I will keep an eye on it in the hope that it will finally enter a stable low state during which the HST observations can be triggered.

Cheers,
Anna

Alert 754 - Schedule Impact due to HST Safe Mode ???

I read that Alert 758 for November, CH UMa has been cancelled due to the HST issue above.

Does the same apply to this campaign or are all observations to continue?

VY Scl campaign continues as usual

Hi Gary,

The VY Scl campaign is not affected by the HST issue.

The reason for this is that the VY Scl observations will be executed as Target of Opportunity (ToO), i.e. they will be included in the HST schedule only when a low state is detected. For the moment, none of the VY Scl targets is expected to be observed by HST in the upcoming weeks.

Therefore, it would be very helpful if the monitoring of the VY Scl targets could continue as usual since I expect that Hubble will be operative soon again, well before a ToO on one of the VY Scl targets is triggered.

Thanks,
Anna

V704 And fading

I'm probably late to notice this, but I didn't find any other comments related to V704 And's current fade. The fade started around 12/13 (JD 59562) and the star is currently at V ~ 16, down 3 magnitudes from its normal state.

V704 And getting faint

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for posting about this.

Indeed I have been keeping an eye on V704 And as it does look like it is entering a low state. We should wait few days to see if it stabilises on this faint state (and hence it is safe to trigger the HST observations) or if it oscillates as, for example, V794 Aql is doing.

I wish all the best for the new year to you and all the AAVSO observes!

Anna

ToO HST observations of V704 And scheduled for Feb 22nd

Dear All,

Since the low state of V704 And seems to be stable, we have triggered its HST observations, which have been scheduled for Feb 22nd (the exact time will be confirmed in the next few days).

It would be great if you could give the highest priority to the observations of V704 And and try to obtain at least one positive measurement per night, till Feb 23rd. These data will be used to confirm that the HST observations will indeed be obtained while the target is still in low state and it is safe to be observed with COS.

Thanks for your support and good luck with the observations!

Great news

I applied for and received telescope time observing this system on one of the Faint Star Monitor network stations barely two weeks ago. After three months of cold and cloudy skies at my site, I'm looking forward to finally submitting some data again. And just in time! :)

HST observations of V704 And couldn't be executed

Dear All,

Unfortunately the HST observations of V704 And couldn't be executed.
As you have seen, the system has been re-brightening in the last ~15 days and, being as bright as V~14 on February 22nd, it was too bright to be observed with COS without endangering the detectors.

Thanks a lot anyway for your prompt response to the Alert Notice and for providing us the necessary data to understand the behaviour of the system.

The observing season for V704 And is now over, but it remains among our target of interest. Please, keep it in your target list and resume the monitoring in early May, when the visibility will be optimal again.

Thanks a lot for all your work and support,
Anna

1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 (Eri)

Hi Anna,

Been watching 1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 for some months now and in the last few nights, it has faded dramatically to mag. 15.2. It's been bright for many months now up until this point so this is the first fading trend that has occurred. A few more nights will tell if the weather holds out.

Cheers,

1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4

Hi Anna,

1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 faded to 15.2 on March 30. I lost a week due to weather and on April 7 was back at 13.9. April 22 was still at 13.8 but last night's observation April 24 showed another quick fade at 15.2.

1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 is only around 25 degrees above my horizon so I won't be able to get much deeper but should get a few more obs in. Let's see what happens in the new observing season.

Cheers,

Rod.

Hi Anna,

My observation last night May 3 showed 1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 returned to its brighter state of around Mag. 13.0 from the recent two small fadings.

I think that is almost done for me as 1SWASP J022916.91-395901.4 is quite low now.

Cheers,

HST observation of KR Aur scheduled for March 11th, 05:56 UT

Dear All,

Few weeks ago we have triggered the ToO HST observations for KR Aur, since it entered a low state at the end of January.
The HST observations have finally been scheduled for March 11th, 05:56 UT.
At the current brightness (V~15.3), KR Aur is still safe for HST and there is the opportunity to get the ultraviolet data even if the system is coming out of the low state.

Tonight's observations would be the most important since we need to obtain a positive detection to confirm that the target it is safe to be observed with COS.
It would be very helpful if you could obtain as many measurements as possible, and as late as possible within the visibility period of the target. Ideally as late as 7 or 8 UT (or even later, according to your location).

Thanks for your support and good luck with the observations!

All the bet,
Anna

HST observation of KR Aur scheduled for March 11th, 05:56 UT

Hi Anna

Unable to upload to AAVSO database - my normal route is via BAA VSS Database but in view of your urgency I would like to pass on my results obtained between March 07.89 UT and March 07.93 UT based on 100 images - the average is 15.307 +/- 0.18 which overlaps Gary Poyner value taken several hours later but it might indicate that it is getting brighter? Errors indicate the high humidity at the time (84%).  I will not be able to get any more data as the weather in the North of England has now closed in with clouds and snow. Hope this is of use. Good luck with your HST observations.

Regards

George

HST observations approved

Dear George, Barbara, All,

Thanks a lot for your prompt response and for the many data you have obtained last night.
The HST team has approved the observations and they will be carried out tonight at ~6 UT.

Any data you can obtain tonight and tomorrow night would be very helpful for us!

All the best,
Anna

HST observations of KR Aur completed

Dear All,

The HST observations of KR Aur were successfully carried out as planned on Sunday morning.
The ground-based monitoring was crucial to show that the system was stable and that the final approval for the execution of the HST observations could be given.

We wouldn't have been able to get these data if it wasn't for you help, so thank you so much to you all for you work and support!

All the best,
Anna

VY Scl faded

Hi Anna,

VY Scl has been varying since July 11, and tonight's observation shows it has faded—low cloud passing, so I could not see any fainter.

Best regards,

Rod.

VY Scl - HST observations scheduled for Nov 17

Hi Rod, hi All,

The low state of VY Scl is a long lasting one so we have triggered the HST observations.
They have been approved and are now scheduled for

Nov 17, 2023 02:24:16    Nov 17, 2023 04:55:41

The target is still quite faint at the moment, with V~18.8

It would be great if you could give try to obtain at least one positive measurement per night, till November 24th. These data will be used to confirm that the HST observations will indeed be obtained while the target is still in low state and it is safe to be observed with COS.

Thanks for your support and good luck with the observations!
Anna

VY Scl failed

Dear All,

Unfortunately the observations of VY Scl weren't successful. Because of a failure, the COS shutter didn't open and no data were recorded. We are working with the HST team to re-observe this object. If the constraints on the overall HST schedule will allow it, the observations could be repeated within the next weeks or one month.

If possible, could you continue monitoring this object to verify that the low state is still ongoing?

I'll post here as soon as I have any news about the re-scheduling.

Thanks to you all for the data and support!

All the best,
Anna

VY Scl couldn't be repeated

Dear All,

Now that the observing season of VY Scl is over I would like to thank you all for all the data you have provided for this target.
Unfortunately, it wasn't possible for the HST team to put it back in the schedule so we missed our opportunity. Nonetheless, your work has been impressive and incredibly useful for our program. Only thanks to your monitoring, we have been able to trigger the HST observations, which would have been successful if it weren't for the problem with shutter.

So thanks a lot for all your efforts!

All the best,
Anna
