The recurrent nova U Sco has been reported to be in outburst (M.Moriyama (Nagasaki, Japan): 2022 Jun. 06.56582 UT, <17.3 unfiltered; Jun 06.56582 UT, 11.4 unfiltered). This report has not been confirmed by other observers. However, because the outbursts of U Sco are so very short, there is no time to be lost, thus this post now, before confirmation. Please confirm, and if confirmed carry out multicolor photometry; visual observations are also welcome. Charts and comparison stars are available from the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP). Report your observations to the AAVSO International Database as soon as possible.

Many thanks and good observing,

Elizabeth O. Waagen, AAVSO HQ

Your confirmation was valuable, as it kicked off much efforts

There have been false alarms for U Sco eruptions, so the many researchers in the SWIFT Nova group (dedicated to nova watching with Swift and other telescopes) did not know what to make of the true discovery report from Japan.  It would be costly to kick off high priority ToO over-rides on various satellites -- if this were a false alarm.  And just as the discussion was getting indeterminant, your confirmation kicked it over to everyone knowing that this was all a *GO*.  With your confirmation, a lot of people started getting quick responses from various satellites.  So, thank you for your speedy confirmation

Evryscope data on-the-rise?

Just wondering whether the Evryscope folks were able to catch this event as it rose from their detection limits.  Supposedly they're covering the sky nightly in Sloan g and/or r at 2-minute cadence from Chile and Mount Laguna (outside San Diego, California).

U Sco outburst confirmed - submit your obs in a timely manner

The 2022 outburst of U Sco has been confirmed by several observers!

Please be sure to submit your observations to the AAVSO International Database (AID) as soon after you make them as possible - do not just post them in the forum. Putting them into the AID will make them available to astronomers worldwide in a timely manner.

Many thanks, and good observing,

Elizabeth

U Sco peaked around 8.0v?

Just submitted 3 observations made between June 06.9403UT and June 07.0243UT: slow rising between 8.1 and 8.0v.
Probably peaked around 8.0v tonight?

U Sco

At Burleith Observatory, Washington DC, R. Schmidt (SREB) obtained 209 Cousins Ic images over a period of 1.92 hours on 7 June 2022 (2459737.56596 - 2459737.63211). During this interval the Ic magnitude brightened from 7.32 to 7.08.

In Ic band a linear fit was derived:  m(Ic) = 7.27 - 2.27*(t - 2459737.566).  Cloudy weather prevented further observations.  Uploaded to AID.
