Friends,

NASA released solar glass safety guidelines, for those who are interested in viewing the sun during the upcoming eclipse. In short: eclipse viewing glasses and handheld solar viewers should meet all the following criteria:

  • Have certification information with a designated ISO 12312-2 international standard
  • Have the manufacturer’s name and address printed somewhere on the product

Also, eclipse glasses should NOT be used if:

  • they are older than three years, or have scratched or wrinkled lenses
  • they are made of homemade filters or are substituted for with ordinary sunglasses -- not even very dark ones -- because they are not safe for looking directly at the Sun

You can read more here: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

Safe solar viewing!

Best wishes – clear skies,

Stella.

Where does 3 year limit on age come from?

I have 4 year old glasses that appear to be in perfect condition.  Why is there a 3 year age concern?
