Alert Notice 416: Nova in Sagittarius (V5585 Sgr = N Sgr 2010)

January 31, 2010

Event: Nova in Sagittarius (V5585 Sgr = N Sgr 2010)

Discovered By: John Seach, Chatsworth Island, NSW, Australia

Discovery Date: Jan. 20.72 UT

Discovery Magnitude: approximately 8.5, using a DSLR with 50-mm f/1.4 lens and orange filter

Position: RA: 18:07:26.95 , Dec: -29:00:43.6 (equinox 2000.0)
from K. Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan, and F. Kabashima, Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, from their image taken 2010 January 23.892

Spectra: H. Maehara, Kwasan Observatory, Kyoto University, reports that a low-resolution spectrogram (range 400-800 nm) obtained on Jan. 23.887 with the 25-cm telescope of the Kwasan Observatory suggests that this object is a Fe II class nova.

Observations Reported to the AAVSO: Jan 22.2870 UT, 9.09, W. Vollmann, Vienna, Austria (green filter from RGB set, image by H. Koberger, Vilaflor, Tenerife);
23.2820, 9.47, Vollmann (green filter from RGB set, image by Koberger);
24.2810, 9.42, Vollmann (green filter from RGB set, image by Koberger);
25.5556, 10.0, S. Aguirre, Hermosillo, Mexico;
26.2860, 10.36, Vollmann (green filter from RGB set, image by Koberger);

Charts: Finder charts for V5585 Sgr may be plotted by entering the coordinates above into VSP: http://www.aavso.org/vsp/

Reporting Observations: Please report all observations to the AAVSO as V5585 SGR. N Sgr 2010 or its AUID 000-BJS-954 may also be used, but V5585 SGR is preferred.

Notes: a. Previously announced in IAU CBET 2140 (Daniel W. E. Green, Editor) and AAVSO Special Notice #190 (Matthew Templeton); additional information from CBET 2142 (Green) and IAU Circular 9112 (Green). Except for observations reported directly to the AAVSO, the information in this Alert Notice is taken from the IAU CBETs and IAU Circular 9112 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.).
b. Nothing was visible down to magnitude 11.5 at this location in an image taken by Seach on 2009 November 15.89 UT. The nova was confirmed by several observers: W. Vollmann, Vienna, Austria, January 22.287 UT, CV=9.3 (image by H. Koberger, Vilaflor, Tenerife); S. Kiyota, Tsukuba, Japan, January 22.862, V=8.98, (V-Rc)=+0.60, (V-Ic)=1.20; K. Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan, and F. Kabashima, Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, January 23.892, CV=8.5.
c. E. Kazarovets and N. N. Samus report that the GCVS team has assigned the name V5585 Sgr to N Sgr 2010.
d. Because of the crowded field, caution is urged as the nova fades.

Congratulations to John Seach on his discovery!

Good observing,

Elizabeth O. Waagen
Senior Technical Assistant
