Newbie question - can I start to observe variable stars?

Dear Forumers,

Currently I am waiting for my 14" high-quality mirror from Rik ter Horst, which would be the optics for my planetary newton in the future. I want to use the scope in the next years from Tenerife (a friend has a flat there with big balcony which I can use for free, so I only have to pay travel expenses).

Feedback on Recording Observations at Star Map Wiki

I recently completed a web application that allows one to create a wiki for any known(cataloged) star. I'm new to AAVSO and know little of how observations are made and recorded. There is a segment of the wiki that provides for plotting observations. It's titled "Plots" and describes creating curves or scatter plots for recording observations. I am hoping it will be usable to AASVO observers. Could you please take at look at it's description at: starmap.wiki/About/about.htm

Friends,

The AAS approved a special session on “Small Telescope Research Communities of Practice” during their upcoming Summer meeting (June 12-16) in San Diego (CA, USA). I will be there, discussing the AAVSO’s role in the era of big surveys and our observers contribution to scientific discovery. If you are in the area (or if you are looking for a good excuse to visit San Diego in June), please join us!

Best wishes – clear skies,

Stella.

A very public THANK YOU to everyone involved with the AAVSO for their hard work!

As a 25 year member of the organization, I thought I was reasonably aware of all the hard work that numerous individuals do to keep the AAVSO moving forward. Now four months into my presidency, I can honestly say that being immersed in the "sausage making" has made me even more awestruck by the dedication, passion, and knowledge of the thousand plus individuals who make up our organization.

CHOICE: How to use VPHOT is about half full. This is a five week course, beginning March 7, on how to utilize the AAVSO's photometry software that also contains a new module on transformations.

I hope you've all read the January 2016 AAVSO newsletter and seen my challenge - how many of you are interested in completing the Astronomical League's Binocular Variable Star Observing Program by the May AAVSO meeting in St. Louis? Here is my challenge (read the President's column): https://www.aavso.org/sites/default/files/newsletter/newsletter67-low.pdf .

Hi all.

New computer, and need to say goodby to PCObs. I've looked at obs manager and Garry P's excell sheet. Any opinions on the best for visual file uploads? Downloading would be good on the same software, if possible.

Best... Alan

Since 2011 the AAVSO has offered online education through the Carolyn Hurless Online Institute for Continuing Education (CHOICE). The schedule of CHOICE courses for 2016 has just been published on the AAVSO website.

An introduction to the CHOICE program is here:

What goes in producing a journal?

Friends,

We have been working towards making the Journal of the AAVSO (JAAVSO) a better means of publication of Variable Star research for our wider community (for professional and non-professional astroresearchers, educators, observers and anyone who is interested in the field). A lot of the relevant work happens behind the scenes, and it is necessary for the smooth operation of the Journal and its effective distribution to the appropriate audience.
