I decided to attempt the president's challenge and start the binocular variable program of the astronomical league.  I decided to make mu cep (greek letter) my first star to observe.  It's mag range is 3.43-5.1.  There is a variable MU Cep with a mag range of 12.7-14.1.  How do I pull up a chart for mu cep (greek letter) and submit observations for mu cep?  If I search for recent observations for mu cep there are only 14 observations in the database.  13 are a mag range of 3.5-4.1.  One observation is 11.7658 mag.  This one is obviously the other MU Cep and not the greek letter mu cep because the greek letter mu cep should have hundreds of observations.  So I don't know how to bring up the greek letter mu cep.  Also, I think there needs to be a correction because the mu Cep that I am pulling up for recent observations is the other variable Mu Cep and not the greek letter mu cep but there are 13 observations there that are for the greek letter mu cep.  Those 13 observations need to go to the greek letter mu cep page of observations.  The chart isn't a big problem because if I make the field of view large enough I can get mu cep (greek letter) on the same chart that is centered on MU Cep.

Greek Letters and Star Names

When you report observations of μ OR ν, please use the spelling of miu OR niu, as in "miu Cen" for μ Cen and "niu Cen" for ν Cen.

The rationale and a table of acceptable names for reporting Greek letter named stars is available on the AAVSO website here-

Mu Cep

Thanks.  Someone from HQ needs to move the 13 observations that I assume are of miu cep that are listed under Mu Cep.  I'll email someone to let them know.

MU/miu Cep observations

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for letting us know about the miu Cep observations in the MU Cep folder. This happens a few times a year and we try to keep an eye on this pair of stars to keep the data sorted properly. (The same thing happens with miu Cen and MU Cen.)  I have moved the miu Cep observations to their correct home.

Good luck with the binocular variables challenge, and good observing!
