On 01/31/2023 I counted 7 groups, of which two are not reported as AR. One has lat coordinates. +29 long. 267.5 and also appears on Spaceweather taken at 02.00TU and from the Kanzelhohe observatory at 10.03 TU, so I excluded that it is a pore since it was still visible at 12.30TU, time of my observation (also visible today February 1nd).
I'm undecided about the other spot, which doesn't appear on the Spaceweather photo, but is reported by Kanzelhohe. It was just visible with Wratten 23A filter towards the center of the Sun (about lat -5.6 long 322). I don't think a pore can last 3 hours, but it could also be another pore that appeared around it...

could you add weblinks to…

could you add weblinks to images, since it's hard to discuss ASCII text referring to real images ?

I build functional model of sunspots with high-power plasma burners but what I get is not dense plasma as on the images of sunspots.

Since ARs are computer generated from magnetograms of the solar dish, just open the relevant one from SIDC or another nice place.

pores and sunspots

Hi Maurizio (CMAB)

Here are the observers and their data for the 31st of January.  From this you can see how others have decided on groups and sunspots

(Also, the problem with MMI, who must be recording from a satellite image):

I am really sorry but could…

I am really sorry but could one explain why the number of groups

jumps from 2 (KAPJ) to 10 and than to 22,  watching the same solar disk on the same day ?

No to mention number of sunspots, as observed, jumps from 3 to 25, 34, 38 and finally to 95

It completely makes no sense

Is it really so complicated to attach smartphone to your telescope to record your view of the solar disc and have it time stamped for the records ?

pore or sunspots?

I try to answer everyone, even if my English is not good...
Hi Darius, sometimes I photograph the Sun with a reflex, but I'm looking for an adapter for my cell phone, not for the quality but because it's simpler and faster. This is the link with the sunspot that I recorded too (01/31/2023 12.30TU)

http://cesar.kso.ac.at/main/cesar_start.php?date=2023-01-31

and is reported as A-1 (Kanzelhöhe Sunspot Drawing).

Hi Rodney, Thanks for the comments regarding January 31st!

I am still looking for magnetograms for your date

AAVSO only wants visual observations

Please understand that the AAVSO only wants visual observations through an earth bound telescope with a white light filter. We do NOT want sunspot and/or group counts from CCD images, or Satellite images. We do not want magneto gram estimates of group counts.

Only visual observations; either projection or direct, from Earth bound telescopes.  Simple: NO,  CCD, CMOS or Satellite image counts of groups and sunspots.

Take the discussion of camera and satellite imaging to some other forum.

Thank you.

sunspot count

Hi darius,

You bring up a very good questions, but I suggest that you use caution drawing any conclusions using single data points from the visual data provided by Rodney. Since this data is unreduced and doesn't include telescope used, magnification, seeing, experience... there can/will be a spread in induvial counts.

I suggest, if possible, that you wait until the monthly bulletin is published and use that reduced data for your analysis.

Regards
