Welcome to the Eclipsing Binary forum

Welcome to the Eclipsing Binary (EB) Forum.  We have set this up to complement the new EB Section web pages.

EBs are interesting to observe!  There are many phenomena we can measure: the light variations due to eclipses, changes to the interval between eclipses, variations in the depth of eclipse, changing intervals between the primary and secondary eclipses, and intrinsic variability of one or both stars.  The time spans range from one night, to years, but all are readily detectable.

Tools to Figure Out Observable Eclipses from my Observation Location

I am looking for software or tool that streamlines eclipse calculations and handles constraints. I know where to find the ephemeris and the times of minimum. I can calculate the time of upcoming eclipses. Ideally this software can factor in my observation location and show only eclipses that I can observe. I am currently working on such a tool, but wanted to check if one already exists.

You are invited to a one--hour webinar on June 1 featuring brief talks from three AAVSO Sections:

  • Solar Observing
  • Eclipsing Binaries
  • Long Period Variables

We’ll also discuss the AAVSO's Section system, and ways to get involved.

I thought this forum would be my first port of call, but sorry to be blunt, the forum looks inactive and I clicked on two

links in posts and both were dead.

I was hoping to get some EB minima if that's useful but wondered where to start.

Maybe there's a better place.

I  assumed that Target Tool would have upcoming worthwhile projects.

Thanks

Kevin

For those who use the worldwide minimum predictor  at: http://var2.astro.cz/EN/brno/predictions_worldwide.php, you have probably noticed that the site is not working for those not in central Europe. It has been down for many months now and even when it was working the ToMs were not very accurate because of outdated elements. The TIDAK database from the Krakow University site is up to date but doesn't have the search features of the Czech site.

Doubts about charts without comparison stars

Hi, I have a couple of questions about charts for eclipsing binaries that have no photometry table obtained using the Variable Star Plotter. I don't know if this is the best forum to ask this question, but I hope you can help me.

When I use a program like Tycho Tracker, it suggests a series of comparison stars whose photometry is obtained from the Atlas catalog, which is the one I have selected. I usually use 4 or 5 comparison stars that have no brightness variation along the time series of images. In this way the light curve of the eclipsing binary can be obtained.
