AAVSO Alert Notice 581 announces an observing campaign on the bright (V = 4.23) and very unusual eclipsing binary HD 148703. This campaign begins immediately - coverage is needed starting now for eclipses occurring June 11 and June 14. Please see the notice for details, observing instructions, and chart instructions.

Many thanks, and good observing!

BS Vul - Measures mislabled?

I wa  setting up my June observing list and selected BS Vul. There is a possible problem. VSX and the ephemeris (pdf mislabled as RR Lyrae) list the V mags as 10.9 - 11.6 V. But the data history show variation up to 9.7V. Do we have a probelm, or is BS Vul really brighter than the ephemeris and VSX show?

Unusual asymmetric EB - can someone explain?

I need help identifying what is happening with this eclipsing binary star with asymmetric primary and secondary transits.  Please see 90 day phase plot and recent R and V filter LCs.  The star is not in VSX or other known variable star database. Star Vmag=11.5 and is located in Cassiopeia. LC mags are differential. The period is 0.612 d.

I found this star with my survey telescope which is looking for exoplanets.  This survey, called the Galactic Plane Exoplanet Survey (GPX), was presented at the AAVSO Fall 2016 conference.

thanks

Paul

To All

I have been doing EB observations now for about two years.  I have been looking for a more detailed discussion of how to interpret the different light curve shapes and what may contribute to their shapes via the stars interaction.  I thought that AAVSO might have some info on the website but I have not found anything to this more advanced level.

Neat new paper summarizing results from Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer...

Just got word from a colleague that a new paper has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement on binary observations made with the Navy Protype Optical Interferometer.

Although not specifically about EBs, the technique (optical interferometry) and the results were so cool, I had to share...here is a link to the arXiv preprint PDF....enjoy!

Hello. My name is Filipp Romanov. I am 19 years old. I found an interesting variable star in NSVS. I would like to request the AAVSO community to observe eclipsing variable NSVS 1489161 because the period is very large (118.03 days). It is rare.

Hello all

I spent the last many hours updating my spreadsheet for the EB recent ToM's and I have a question.

I noted that there were a number of EB listed with multiple ToMs with their own Epochs.  My question is what is the period for these.
It is assumed (yes I know) that unless noted in the article or on http://www.as.up.krakow.pl/ephem that the secondary and following reoccurances
have the same period but just different start times?

Hi everyone,

Someone posted a request data for capturing a ToM for a variable within the past week.  It was one that has not had a measurement since 1933 or so.  Can anyone tell me what that variable was?  I believe the start of the eclipse happens tonight.  I can't find it anywhere on the forums for some reason.

Thanks,

Submitting Data

I am trying to submit data for an eclipsing binary.  I emailed   aavsoeblegacy@gmail.com but the email bounced.  Is there another email address?  Gerry gave me his card at the spring meeting but I lost it.  If the above email address is no longer valid then maybe it can be updated on the EB page.

Thanks,

Barbara
