AAVSO Spectroscopy Workshop (ASW2020)

The Row Hotel, Somerville, MA

Interest in amateur spectroscopy has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. Spectroscopy workshops in 2018 and 2019 in Southern New Mexico (SMSW-1 and SMSW-2) drew close to 100 attendees total.  This year we are moving to New England and joining with the AAVSO for the first AAVSO Spectroscopy Workshop (ASW2020).  Our in-depth two-day program will include presentations by experienced amateur astronomers and professional astronomers.  The workshop will teach you about the hardware and software used by amateurs.  Over the two-day workshop you will be introduced to the kinds of projects you can do as an amateur and how you can contribute to pro/am collaborations (including the AAVSO Spectroscopy Database).  This year due to a larger venue we will be able to offer concurrent sessions aimed at beginners as well as experienced amateurs.  The focus in 2020 will be on more hands-on activities and small group discussions.  However, our goal remains the same: we want to help newbies get started with astronomical spectroscopy and we want to help experienced amateurs improve. The registration fee for this workshop will be announced later this Spring.  Questions about the ASW2020 can be emailed to Ken Hudson at:

November 5 & 6

Astronomical Photographic Plate Collection Tour

Harvard College Observatory
Cambridge, MA

At Harvard College Observatory, women studied and curated over 130 years of the night sky, all preserved on glass plate photographs. Harvard College Observatory's Astronomical Photographic Plate Collection is the largest archive of celestial glass plates in the world. There are over 500,000 images, covering both the northern and southern hemispheres, spanning the years 1882-1992.  The AAVSO has arranged four private tours of the Plate Collection (10am and 1pm each day). The tour takes about 45 minutes.  Harvard limits each tour size to 10 people. Advanced registration will be required and transportation to the venue will be on your own from the hotel via taxi, Uber or carpool.  The Observatory is about 5 miles from the Meeting hotel in Somerville, MA.

November 6th

 AAVSO Headquarters Tour

AAVSO staff members, Elizabeth Waagen and Sara Beck will be giving tours of the AAVSO headquarters on Friday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm. Be sure to stop by if you have a chance. HQ is about 6 miles from the Meeting hotel and transportation will be on your own. Parking is very limited so we encourage small groups to take taxis, Uber or Lyft to headquarters.
