Event: Nova in Mensa: N Men 2022 (= ATLAS22beux = AT 2022ufh)

Discovered by: ATLAS (reported by J. Tonry et al., ATLAS reporting group)

Discovery magnitude: ATLAS orange magnitude 13.688

Discovery date: 2022 September 16.1222 UT

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 06 29 08.41  Decl. -71 29 38.9  (from VSX page for N Men 2022)

Spectra: Spectroscopy indicating the object to be a nova was announced by M. Toy et al. (TNS AstroNote 2022-193), who report that spectra obtained by the ePESTO+ group on 2022 Sep. 9.3818 UT show ATLAS22beux to be a galactic nova.

Observing recommendations: This interesting nova was discovered at orange ATLAS magnitude ~13.7 on Sep. 15. It brightened to magnitude ~11.5 g (ASAS-SN) on Sep. 19, faded to ~13.1 g (ASAS-SN) on Sep. 23, then brightened again to ~11.7 CV (Hambsch) on Sep 24. It is continuing to fluctuate.

Please observe N Men 2022 as it continues to evolve, with observations of all types (visual, CCD/CMOS, DSLR, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits. Frequency of observation depends on the rate of decline, but Dr. Fred Walter (Stony Brook University) recommends a minimum of one observation per night per band. For spectroscopy, he recommends spectra in blue to observe He II 4686, H-beta, and the Bowen blend (4640A), in addition to H-alpha. Cadence for spectra depends on how fast the nova continues to evolve, but, he adds, "you can't go wrong with a spectrum every clear night."
