Special Notice #293: S Dor campaign continued through 2012-2013 season

CONTINUED THROUGH 2017

September 10, 2012:  Dr. Noel Richardson (Georgia State University) has requested that the observing campaign on the luminous blue variable prototype S Dor (AAVSO Alert Notice 453, AAVSO Special Notice #280) be continued through the 2012-2013 observing season.

As reported in the July 2012 AAVSO Newlsetter, Dr. Richardson writes: "We are very happy with the AAVSO data collected in the recent months. We are certainly beginning the analysis of the data. We will likely continue our optical spectroscopy through the end of the year, and support AAVSO observations would be warmly welcomed...My collaborators and I are planning a campaign next year, and I will be certain that they know how wonderful the AAVSO support is for optical photometry support!"

Observers are therefore asked please to continue observing S Dor. Visual and photometric observations are requested on a nightly or twice-nightly basis as described in Alert Notice 453 and Special Notice #280. BVRI photometry would be ideal, but any filter(s) would be very helpful. According to observations in the AAVSO International Database, S Dor is currently V magnitude 9.951.

Coordinates: RA = 05 18 14.35  Dec = -69 15 01.1 (2000.0)

Charts may be created using VSP (http://www.aavso.org/vsp).

Please submit observations to the AAVSO International Database using the name S DOR.

This campaign is also described on the AAVSO Observing Campaigns page (http://www.aavso.org/observing-campaigns).

Your observations continue to be key to the success of this campaign. If you have been observing S Dor, please continue. If you have not, and if you can observe this far south, please add S Dor to your nightly list. Many thanks!
