Event: Very Bright Nova in Scorpius
This nova, discovered at 9th magnitude 12 days ago, has brightened dramatically in the past few days to 3rd magnitude, becoming one of the brightest novae in the past several years. It has gained the attention of the professional community and will be observed by numerous satellites, including Chandra, Swift, and INTEGRAL.
January 21, 2013: AAVSO observations are requested of the SW Sex-type novalike variable BB Dor in support of one and possibly two sets of multiwavelength observations: Dr. Tomohito Ohshima (Department of Astronomy, Kyoto University) and colleagues have triggered Target of Opportunity observations with NASA's Swift gamma-ray burst satellite, and Dr. Boris Gaensicke (Warwick University) is hoping to observe BB Dor in the ultraviolet with HST.
June 28, 2012: The recently discovered gamma-ray source Swift J1910.2-0546 (Krimm et al., ATel #4139; Barthelmy et al., GCNC #13369; T. Ohshima., vsnet-alert 14674) is optically bright, reaching magnitude CR = 15.7 on 2012 June 14 (R. Pickard, BAAVSS, using the Faulkes Telescope South). The object was also observed by A. 6 June 2012: Dr. Koji Mukai (Universities Space Research Association/NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) has requested AAVSO observers' assistance in monitoring the SS Cyg-type dwarf nova RU Peg in support of target-of-opportunity observations with the NASA Swift satellite during an outburst.
His observations will be targeted during the rise to outburst and during late decline from outburst. Thus, your prompt notification to AAVSO Headquarters of activity in RU Peg will be crucial to the success of this campaign.
April 10, 2012: Dr. Michael Rupen (National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Socorro, NM) has informed us that he and his colleagues of the EVLA (Expanded Very Large Array) Nova Team are carrying out a multiwavelength campaign on the Fe II-type nova Nova Oph 2012 [V2676 Oph]. They have triggered observations with Swift, JVLA (Jansky Very Large Array), SMA (Submillimeter Array), and high-resolution optical spectroscopy. He is requesting AAVSO observations in support.
